Sajid Ali Sadpara Becomes First Pakistani to Summit Annapurna without Oxygen or Porters' Support
On April 16, 2023, mountaineer Sajid Ali Sadpara achieved a historic feat by becoming the first Pakistani to summit Annapurna mountain in Nepal, the world's 10th highest peak, without the aid of supplemental oxygen or high-altitude porters. Sadpara accomplished the climb in Alpine style, where climbers manage everything from carrying food, tent, ropes, and setting routes themselves. The Kathmandu-based commercial adventure operator Seven Summit Treks, whose Annapurna Expedition 2023 Sadpara was a part of, confirmed his feat in an Instagram post, congratulating him on his achievement.
Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Khalid Khursheed Khan and the Alpine Club of Pakistan also congratulated Sadpara for his accomplishment, hailing it as a proud moment for Pakistan. Before his departure, Sadpara had announced his mission to summit three of the world's highest mountains, including Annapurna, without supplemental oxygen and Alpine style. He had earlier climbed K2, Gasherbrum-I, and Gasherbrum-II peaks in Pakistan and Manaslu in Nepal without oxygen.
Sadpara's mission to climb all 14 eight-thousanders without supplementary oxygen is the fulfillment of his father's dream, who himself was a celebrated mountaineer. Sadpara's father, Muhammad Ali Sadpara, along with two other climbers, had gone missing while attempting to summit the K2 during the winter season in February 2021. The bodies of the climbers were found in July 2021.
Sajid Ali Sadpara has become a prominent figure in the Alpine community, having climbed the world's most daunting peaks at a young age. He aims to climb all 14 peaks above eight-thousand metres altitude without supplementary oxygen, cementing his legacy as a pioneer in the field of mountaineering.
