An Indian politician, who previously held public office, has been tragically victimized by a violent act of murder on live television. Shockingly, the politician's brother was also fatally shot in the same incident, which has sent shockwaves throughout the nation.
Former Indian Politician and Brother Fatally Shot on Live TV: Nation Mourns Tragic Loss
In a shocking and brazen attack, former Indian Member of Parliament Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were fatally shot at close range by gunmen posing as journalists on live television. Ahmed, who had been imprisoned since 2019 on charges of kidnapping, was being taken to the hospital by police for medical examinations when the attack occurred. Three individuals have been detained and are currently being questioned by authorities.
The television clip from the city of Prayagraj showed the attackers shouting Hindu slogans after the shooting. While the victims were from India's Muslim minority, police have not confirmed whether the killings were motivated by sectarian reasons. Both brothers were deeply involved in India's criminal underworld, with Ahmed reportedly facing over 100 different cases. The attackers are believed to be petty criminals.
"Violence against individuals, regardless of their past or present circumstances, is a heinous act that has no place in a civilized society. The tragic loss of Atiq Ahmed and his brother is a stark reminder of the dangers that exist in our world, and we must continue to work towards a safer and more just society for all"
In the days leading up to the shooting, police in the same state had shot dead Ahmed's 19-year-old son and his accomplice in a shootout. Extra-judicial executions have been common in the state of Uttar Pradesh, with many individuals facing charges killed in similar "police encounters".
Ahmed had claimed in a petition to India's top court that his life was under threat from the police. His shooting has sparked outrage among opposition parties, who accuse the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of ruling by fear.
Following the incident, gatherings of more than four people have been banned across the crime-rife northern state of Uttar Pradesh, which has a population of over 200 million people. It is worth noting that hundreds of politicians across India, belonging to all political parties, have criminal cases pending against them, with Uttar Pradesh being a particular hotspot. This includes nearly half of the government ministers in the state, including the state premier, according to independent monitoring group the Association for Democratic Reforms.
