One Year Since Imran Khan's Ouster: PTI Calls it a Black Day while Government Celebrates April 9-10, 2023 marks one year since former prime minister Imran Khan was ousted through a vote of no confidence (VONC) moved by the then-opposition, leading to the formation of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). The incumbent coalition government comprising the PPP, PML-N, and JUI-F had announced the no-confidence motion against Imran, which succeeded by securing lawmakers from the PTI on their side. In a National Assembly session that lasted more than 12 hours, Imran's prime ministerial term came to an end as the opposition's no-trust motion against him succeeded with 174 members out of the 342 voting in its favour, making him the first premier in Pakistan's history to be ousted through a VONC.
On this one-year anniversary of Imran's ouster, PTI leaders have called it a "black day" while figures linked to the government celebrated "topping the one-page regime." PTI Chairman Imran Khan launched the "Haqeeqi Azaadi" (real freedom) movement against the coalition government, which he calls a "jihad" against injustice. The PTI's official Twitter account shared a detailed thread comparing the incumbent government's achievements with theirs and decrying the alleged political victimization of their party workers.
However, leaders from the coalition government did not shy away from celebrating their year in power. Kasim Gillani, son of former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani, praised Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the chairman of his party, who emerged as the "most valuable player" in the successful no-confidence vote against Imran Khan. Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Economy and Energy Bilal Azhar Kayani said in a press conference that Imran Khan is responsible for the present economic turmoil in the country, with six million people becoming jobless during his tenure and 20 million people being forced to live under the poverty line.
PTI Secretary General Asad Umar criticized the incumbent government for the ongoing financial crisis in the country, saying that the growth rate reduced by tenfold in a single year after the regime change conspiracy, and that Pakistan has not seen the level of inflation as it has in the last year. Former human rights minister Shireen Mazari tweeted that the regime-change conspiracy brought a cabal of crooks into power after the Supreme Court of Pakistan took suo-motu action against Qasim Suri's ruling. She added that the imported government and facilitators had destroyed democracy, constitution, and the rule of law in one year.
PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said, "One year of Pakistan's worst fascist junta," and that the power would transfer to the people, while PTI leader Faisal Javed Khan compared the international oil prices and corresponding fuel prices in Pakistan in April last year during Imran's tenure and this year, terming the difference to be "the cost of corruption, incapability and slavery.
