Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan vows to caution citizens
of the genuine threat that the government may not hold elections, even after
the Supreme Court's ruling, due to their fear of defeat.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has
declared a 'Youm-i-Tashakur' (Day of Gratitude) celebration across 75 cities in
Pakistan following the Supreme Court's (SC) verdict on Punjab polls. The former
prime minister announced in a tweet that he will address the people and alert
them to the real danger that, despite the SC's order, the ruling party may
still not hold elections due to their fear of losing. He urged the citizens to
be prepared to come out on the streets for peaceful protests in support and
protection of the Constitution upheld by the SC.The SC had accepted PTI's petition against the Election
Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) decision to postpone polls in Punjab till
October 8, and declared the ECP's order unconstitutional in its verdict on
Tuesday. The three-judge bench ordered the Punjab caretaker government to assist
the ECP with elections and instructed the federal government to release Rs21
billion to the ECP by April 10. The SC also fixed May 14 as the date for the
Punjab elections.Imran Khan's 'Youm-i-Tashakur' event will be held on the
same day across various cities in Pakistan to express gratitude for the SC's
decision and to mobilize citizens for peaceful protests to support democracy
and the Constitution. The SC's verdict has been widely welcomed by the
opposition parties and civil society organizations, as it upholds the
democratic principles and ensures free and fair elections in Punjab.
