Supreme Court Bench Dissolves, Halting Hearing on Case Regarding Delay of Punjab and KP Polls

Supreme Court Five-Member Bench Dissolved in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Polls Date Case Following Justice Amin-Ud-Din Khan's Recusal

ISLAMABAD: In a significant turn of events on Thursday, Justice Amin-Ud-Din Khan's recusal from the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa polls date case led to the dissolution of the Supreme Court's five-member bench. The bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Amin-Ud-Din Khan, and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, was scheduled to hear Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's plea against the Election Commission of Pakistan's decision to postpone the elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Upon the bench's arrival, Justice Khan recused himself, citing Justice Qazi Faez Isa's verdict. The other bench members subsequently left the courtroom. The Supreme Court stated that the case would resume at 11:30 am on Friday without Justice Khan.

Earlier, a special Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Isa had ordered the suspension of all suo motu cases under Article 184(3) of the Constitution until amendments are made to the Supreme Court Rules governing the chief justice's discretionary powers. The delay in the hearing was reportedly due to the judges' consultation over the applicability of the order on 184(3) proceedings, which has the signatures of Justice Khan.
